Conservation and Catch Limits on the River Dart
Sea trout are a precious and declining resource. Responsible fishing is essential to protect the future of the Dart.
Current Guidelines
- Bag limit: 2 fish per night
- Strong encouragement for catch and release
Protecting Larger Fish
Fish over 6lb, especially hens, should be released:
- They are vital for future spawning
- Larger fish carry the strongest genetics
Handling Fish Properly
- Keep fish in the water as much as possible
- Use barbless or de-barbed hooks
- Handle gently with wet hands
The Bigger Picture
Like many rivers across the UK, the Dart has seen:
- A decline in sea trout numbers
- Fewer large shoals of school peal
Careful management and angler responsibility are critical.
Top Tip
A released fish is an investment in the future of the river.
