Fishing Up-River for Sea Trout

While Totnes Weir Pool gets most of the attention, the up-river beats can offer quieter—and often more rewarding—fishing.

Why Fish Up-River?

  • Less crowded
  • More water to explore
  • Fish that have already moved upstream

Choosing Your Water

Avoid obvious, over-fished pools early in the evening. Instead:

  • Walk further
  • Fish quieter stretches
  • Return to popular pools later in the night

Tackle & Approach

A lighter setup usually works best:

  • 9–10ft #6/7 rod
  • Floating line (later season)
  • Intermediate (early season, higher water)

Techniques

  • Fish traditional wet flies
  • Try a muddler on the dropper
  • Cover water steadily

In higher or coloured water, daytime fishing can occasionally produce results.

Top Tip

Effort equals reward—those willing to walk further often find the better fish.
