Totnes Weir Pool – How to Fish It Properly

Totnes Weir Pool is the River Dart’s most famous sea trout venue—and for good reason.

Understanding the Pool

The key factor here is tide.

  • Best fishing: 2 hours either side of low tide
  • Ideal condition: tidal height below 1.5m

Outside of this window, fishing can be far less productive.

Tackle Setup

It’s wise to have two rods ready:

Heavy Setup

  • 10ft #7/8 rod
  • Fast sinking line
  • 10lb leader
  • Large tube flies (up to 3”)

Top patterns:

  • Alexandra
  • Stoat / Silver Stoat

Lighter Setup

  • 9–10ft #6/7 rod
  • Floating or intermediate line
  • 7lb leader
  • Smaller flies (sizes 6–8)

Top patterns:

  • Mallard & Claret
  • Peter Ross
  • Teal, Blue & Silver

Etiquette Matters

  • Arrive early and speak to other anglers
  • Take turns and rotate through the pool
  • Respect the limited space

Top Tip

Success at the Weir Pool is as much about timing and positioning as it is about fly choice.
