High Summer Challenges – Catching Dart Trout in Bright Conditions
Fishing the River Dart in high summer can test even experienced anglers. Low water levels and bright sunlight make trout cautious and selective.
Why It Gets Difficult
- Reduced water levels mean less cover
- Bright light makes trout more wary
- Increased angling pressure can educate fish
Go Small
When conditions are tough:
- Use flies as small as size 18–20
- A Black Gnat can be surprisingly effective
Fish Early or Late
- Early morning and evening are prime times
- Look for fish feeding during low light periods
Stay Stealthy
- Wear dull colours
- Keep low and avoid skyline exposure
- Make longer, more delicate casts
Best Areas to Target
- Shaded banks
- Undercut edges
- Faster, oxygen-rich water
Top Tip
In summer, success often comes down to stealth over skill.
