Early Season Tactics for River Dart Brown Trout
The River Dart comes alive from 15th March, offering anglers the chance to target wild brown trout in crisp spring conditions. Early season fishing can be challenging—but incredibly rewarding if approached correctly.
In the early months, water temperatures remain low, which means trout are less active and tend to hold in deeper, slower water. They won’t chase flies far, so presentation is everything.
The River Dart has a few tried-and-tested favourites:
- Pheasant Tail Nymph – the classic Dart fly, deadly in cold conditions
- Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear (GRHE) – especially effective as a gold-head nymph
- March Brown (wet fly) – great for searching runs
- Blue Upright – a reliable traditional pattern
How to Fish It
Focus on deeper pools, seams, and slower glides
- Use a light nymphing setup with a 4 or 5-weight rod
- Keep drifts natural and drag-free
- Fish slowly—early season success rewards patience
Top Tip
If you're not catching, slow everything down. Early season Dart trout rarely move far for food.
