Choosing the Right Gear for River Dart Trout Fishing
You don’t need complicated gear to fish the River Dart—but the right setup will make a huge difference.
Rod & Reel Setup
- Rod: 8ft, 4 or 5-weight (ideal for tight Dart conditions)
- Reel: Lightweight with a smooth drag (nothing fancy needed)
Lines to Carry
- Floating line – your go-to for most situations
- Intermediate line – useful when fishing wet flies or deeper runs
Leader Setup
- Use a long, fine leader (9–12ft)
- Tippet strength around 3X–6X depending on conditions
Why This Matters
The Dart is often:
- Narrow and tree-lined
- Clear and shallow
- Demanding in terms of presentation
A lighter setup helps with accuracy, delicacy, and control.
Top Tip
If you’re struggling with casting in tight spots, shorten your rod slightly or adjust your casting angle—Dart fishing is as much about adaptability as technique.
